Salt stressed farmland is usually framed as a dead end.

A new Science Advances study suggests plants have a microbial back‑up plan.

Researchers working with soybean found that when roots are exposed to salty soils, plants “recruit” a group of beneficial bacteria called pseudomonads to the root zone.

Surprisingly, these microbes aren’t helping by blocking sodium. Instead, they trigger the plant to ramp up lignin production in the roots: boosting structural strength and resilience.
