Many medicinal plants come from rural communities that have known them, harvested them, and looked after them for generations. That’s where quality starts.
➡️ But the chain between those communities and the finished product is usually long, opaque, and focused on the lowest price. Farmers and Collectors get paid little, and demand may come and go.
Middlemen can blend and substitute material, and the brand ends up with no idea where it came from.
When traceability and the quality chain are not intact, consumers get the result: inconsistent quality, adulteration, and label claims nobody can check.
The land pays too. When ethical collection doesn’t pay, people lose their reason to protect the ecosystems those plants grow in, and if adulterated material is sold on the market, no benefits will ever reach the land or the communities.
It doesn’t have to work this way. When local bioeconomies are supported and connected all the way through to the finished product, consumers get better products and biodiversity gets its defenders back.
