Apamarga (aka. Devil’s Horsewhip; Achyranthes aspera) is a herbacious perennial with long spikes of flowers that develop burr-like seed heads which readily attach to clothing and animal fur. It is present in disturbed areas, like roadsides, and now widespread in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide.

Apamarga has other uses beyond the medicinal, but they are often overlooked. Seeds can be cooked, and the plant has been cultivated as a food crop in parts of China; young parts are also used locally as a minor vegetable or fodder source. Burning the plant produces potash-rich ash, traditionally used as a laundry alkali, as an alkali source in dyeing, and (mixed with mustard oil and salt) as tooth-cleaning powder; dried twigs can serve as simple toothbrushes.
In Ayurveda, Unani, Siddha, and regional folk traditions, different parts of the plant have been used for respiratory support, digestive health, skin complaints, and urinary and joint comfort.
Root, leaf, and seed preparations are also used externally for wounds, itching, insect stings, and snakebite, while some traditions use them for dental pain, eye complaints, and difficult labor.
Through scientific investigation, reported activities are wide-spread and include anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, antiasthmatic, antiallergic, antidiabetic/hypoglycemic, antihyperlipidemic, diuretic, laxative/purgative, antiulcer, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, cardioprotective/hypotensive, antipyretic/antimalarial, wound-healing, immunomodulatory, antifertility/spermicidal, and antiparasitic effects.
A preclinical study examined fractions from an 80% methanol leaf extract in wound-healing and inflammation models. The chloroform fraction showed the strongest effects, reducing experimentally induced paw edema by 52.5% and reducing measures of chronic inflammation by 37.52% and 52.81%; its activity was reported as comparable to indomethacin in that experiment.
Apamarga shows promise in several areas for clinical and market development, as it has been examined for potential in prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, its confirmed antiinflammatory activities, blood sugar balancing, broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, cardiovascular, immune and anti-aging support.
