Botanists described a stunning new species, recently, Barleria thunbergiiflora, uncovered during a National Geographic expedition to the highland grasslands of eastern Angola.
This tropical member of the Acanthaceae family dazzles with its vivid blue-lilac, funnel-shaped flowers, distinct within its genus and reminiscent of the popular ornamental Thunbergia.
➡️ Every new species discovered is a testament to nature’s creativity and the importance of ongoing botanical exploration.
Notably, B. thunbergiiflora is only known from three remote sites atop nutrient-poor Kalahari sands, underscoring the unique biodiversity harbored in under-explored African ecosystems.
The species was described and differentiated from its relatives based on both flower form and genetic studies, and (thanks to its remote habitat and relatively low human impact) it is currently listed as Least Concern, although its known range is extremely limited.
Gratitude to the botanists and field scientists who continue to reveal the hidden wonders of our planet for the benefit of both nature and people.
