Menthol  is a cyclic monoterpenoid found in mint (Mentha) species responsible  for the minty taste of peppermint oil. It is known to have local  anesthetic and weak k-opiod receptor agonist activity.

A meta-analysis of pooled clinical data  involving 12 randomized trials with 835 patients found peppermint oil to  be safe and effective for the pain and global symptoms in adults with  IBS.
