Pinene is a naturally occurring monoterpene with a distinctive pine-like aroma that exists in two structural isomers, alpha-pinene and beta-pinene. One of the most common terpenes found in nature, it is a major component of the essential oils of many coniferous trees, such as pines (Pinus spp.), as well as in rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.).
Among its possible health benefits:
· Antiinflammatory
· Brochodilator
· Antimicrobial
· Analgesic
· Anxiolytic
· Antioxidant
· Memory Enhancement
· Neuroprotection
· Anti-tumor
· Insecticidal
Interestingly, as alpha- and beta-pinene rich essential oil containing plants have traditionally been used for gastrointestinal disorders, a series of studies have confirmed gastroprotective effects. In a recent preclinical study exploring the gastroprotective effects of pinene, it was found to produce a decrease in inflammatory markers in the gastric tissue, increase antioxidant enzyme levels, such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, in the gastric mucosa, preserve the integrity of the gastric mucosal lining and enhance the production of mucus and other protective factors in the stomach lining.
