Plant Fact: Feeds on Rodents!

Nepenthes attenboroughii, a giant carnivorous pitcher plant discovered on the Philippine island of Palawan, is named in honor of naturalist Sir David Attenborough.

Known for its massive pitchers, which can reach up to 30 cm (12 inches) in height, it is one of the largest species of Nepenthes, which as been observed to even feed on rodents and other small mammals!

These pitchers are designed to trap prey that falls inside, where digestive fluids break down organic matter to provide nutrients in nutrient-poor soils.

Decoctions or infusions made from pitcher plants are sometimes used in traditional medicine for coughs, stomach issues, and skin conditions

Thier carnivorous ability underscores its role as a fascinating example of botanical predation.
