In some of the world’s harshest environments, plants have developed clever ways to beat the heat.
Many desert and alpine plants have reflective leaf surfaces or are covered in fine white hairs, helping them deflect sunlight and minimize water loss.
Take Artemisia (sagebrush) or Edelweiss, for example. Their silvery, fuzzy leaves act like natural sunshields, keeping leaf temperatures cooler and reducing evaporation. These adaptations not only help them survive scorching days but also protect delicate internal tissues from UV radiation.
