Those who know me know I despise fake plants. You know the kind—you walk into somoene’s home or a restaurant and there are these sad plastic plant look-alikes that are covered with dust and usually missing pieces. Sad. Even worse when they are outside!
Well, Bravo to the state of CA (link below). I am not a huge supporter of lawns, but we certainly don’t need to be replacing our natural spaces (even if they are only small backyard areas) with PLASTIC!!!! Ugh.
And to top it all off this trend of lazy people who are doing this are not only taking away natural spaces, opportunities for pollinators and biodiversity, but they are poisoning the environment with “forever chemicals”.
Here’s the deal guys: horticulturists have done a wonderful job coming up with aesthetically pleasing xeriscape alternatives to grass—and the nurseries are full of such options. And there are very low water alternatives to lawns, as well, that serve this function. If you are tempted to astroturf your yard, go out there and educate yourself—find an alternative!
