Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) is also referred to as Brahmi in Ayurvedic medicine, which means “god-like” or universal consciousness, and refers to its highly revered status, as well as use in meditation.
In the Ayurvedic tradition, it is one of the rasayana herbs, which has tonifying uses for promoting rejuvenation, intellect, and nervous system balance. It is also one of the key herbs used for supporting the crown chakra, which is located at the crown of the head, and associated with states of higher consciousness, insight, and spirituality.
In some Asian countries, Gotu Kola is also one of the most commonly consumed green leafy vegetables, and thought of as a very nutritious and health-promoting food. It is also consumed in juice, drink and other food product preparation.
Gotu Kola is also considered a nootropic, an herb that promotes cognitive health and function. In clinical studies, it has been found to support cognitive function, in conjunction with supporting mood and calming the mind. Clinically, it seems the cognitive benefit with Gotu Kola is related to improvements in mood.
Preclinical investigation has found it to be antidiabetic, wound-healing, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and for promoting and protecting brain health and memory.
