As its common name implies, Sage (Salvia officinalis) is a plant that has long held an association with higher cognition and wisdom.
One of the major spices of the globally, Sage is originally from the Middle East and Mediterranean regions, but now naturalized throughout several regions. As a medicinal plant, Sage has been used in traditional medicine for a multitude of conditions, including cognition, hyperglycemia, inflammation, dizziness, tremor, paralysis, diarrhea, and seizure. German Commission E has listed its use for several conditions including dyspepsia and inflammation.
Clinical trials have found Sage to reduce total cholesterol and improve the blood lipid profile, reduce blood sugar levels, and HbA1c. Clinical studies have also confirmed its age-old use for cognition, as it has improved cognitive functions and mood not only in patients with Alzheimer’s disease, but also even for healthy young participants!
