Your gut microbiome needs fuel, and dietary fiber is an important food source.
➡️ New research show that when dietary fiber runs low, some microbes can shift toward breaking down the mucus layer that helps protect the gut lining.
Two new studies add nuance to the familiar fiber story. Researchers found that plant fiber (and certain indigestible plant proteins, dubbed “proteins imitating fiber” or Prif) can steer microbial metabolism toward more favorable compounds.
In the study, fiber and Prif shifted gut-derived phenol metabolites away from compounds associated with systemic toxicity and poorer outcomes in kidney disease and cancer, and toward phenylalanine-derived metabolites associated with gut health and healthy body weight.
As explained by the study: when fiber is scarce, microbes are more likely to consume proteins from the host’s mucus layer, producing more of the less favorable metabolites.
Fiber helps reduce that mucus breakdown; indigestible plant proteins provide microbes with alternative dietary material to work with.
This study adds a warning to the normal advice. It isn’t just:
“Feed your Microbiome”; it should be
“Feed Your Microbiome, or Your Microbiome Will Start Raiding the Pantry.”
💡 The practical takeaway is not to chase a single miracle fiber. It is to eat a diverse range of whole plant foods (legumes, whole grains, nuts, seeds, vegetables, and fruit) so your microbes have something better to eat than you.
