Beta-ecdysterone is a naturally occurring steroidal phytohormone classified as a phytoecdysteroid. While it mimics the function of molting hormones in insects, in plants it serves as a defense molecule against herbivorous insects. Notable botanical sources of beta-ecdysterone include Ajuga turkestanica, Rhaponticum carthamoides (Maral root), Cyanotis arachnoidea, Spinach and Asparagus.
Among its possible health benefits:
· Anabolic Effects
· Adaptogen
· Antioxidant
· Anti-inflammatory
· Hypoglycemic
· Bone Protection
· Hepatoprotective
· Wound Healing
In one study strength training outcomes were tested in young men over a 10-week period. Forty-six participants received varying doses of ecdysterone-containing supplements, with blood and urine monitored for both ecdysterone and potential doping substances. The results showed significantly greater gains in muscle mass and one-repetition bench press strength among those taking ecdysterone compared to controls. Similar anabolic effects were confirmed in vitro using C2C12 muscle cells. Importantly, no adverse effects on liver or kidney function were observed.
