Often when people think of biodiversity they think of the rainforest. This is the area which is often given as an example of very high biodiversity.
However, few people realize that biodiversity is all around us!
Even in the suburbs, we have a diversity of plants, animals, insects, people and microbes that make their lives happen in that suburban ecosystem. And just because one belongs to an urban or developed area doesn’t mean that area isn’t important for life.
Many people think of gardens as only hobbies or something that is like an ornament for the yard. However, they are so much more!
Common garden plants often have incredible uses and histories of why humans kept them around in the first place.
Take a look at a few examples of garden plants with multiple uses and then ponder your own surroundings…
