The Traditional Medicine of the Maasai

Post Series: Global Traditional Medicine Systems

In order to spread awareness about the rich living herbal traditions from around the world, this post series is intended to introduce some of the characteristics of the herbal or traditional medicine systems to which plants belong.

The Maasai people are from East Africa, particularly in Kenya and Tanzania. Traditional medical practices remain an integral part of Maasai culture, contributing to the health and well-being of the community. Deeply integrated into the Maasai way of life is a close relationship with the environment and understanding of the natural world. As they are pastoralists, spending most of their time herding in the savannas and forests, they have also acquired a relationship with plant species, providing medicine, construction materials, firewood and fodder for their cattle.

The Traditional Medicine of the Maasai utilizes diverse techniques, including the use of herbal remedies. Maasai herbalists, known as Laibons, possess extensive knowledge of local flora and their medicinal properties. They employ various preparations from roots, leaves, bark, and other plant parts for a wide range of ailments. In addition to herbal medicine, the Maasai employ physical therapies such as massage and bone setting. They also practice spiritual healing, which involves rituals, prayers, and the use of charms and amulets to ward off evil spirits and bring good health. These practices are often passed down through generations, with knowledge being transferred orally from elders to younger members of the community.

Herbs are a central aspect of the Traditional Medicine of the Maasai. One notable example is the Ugandan Greenheart Tree (Warburgia ugandensis) bark, used for various infections and ailments such as chest complaints, colds, coughs and flu. Another important plant is Oloirien (Olea europaea subsp. africana), also known as the African olive tree. Its leaves and bark are used to treat fevers and respiratory issues. The Olkiloriti plant (Acacia nilotica) is used for its antiseptic properties and is often applied to wounds to prevent infection, as well as for respiratory conditions.
