“Grandmother Cedar”

“Grandmother Cedar”

Although commonly called “Cedar” in certain regions, like by Native Americans of the Southwestern US, this is actually a Juniper species. I found this beauty off the trail in Arizona, with a much bigger girth to its trunk than most of the individuals found on the high desert in the region.

Although it has many traditional medicinal uses, Native Americans and people of many other cultures consider this plant to be useful for warding off bad spirits or energy. I always think it is interesting when one plant is used for the same use by many separate cultures, such is the case with this Juniper and many several other incense or smudging plants.
