A fragrance made famous in Chanel No5, Ylang ylang (Cananga odorata) produces an essential oil very floral with jasmine notes. Shown in clinical studies to be not to only be calming, but ‘harmonizing’ as it was simultaneously able to increase alertness while reducing heart rate and blood pressure.
Ylang Ylang is considered not only important for the perfume industry, but also for potential applications in agriculture and medicine as through a number of recent scientific studies, the bioactive compounds in the essential oil have been found to exhibit antimicrobial, antibiofilm, anti-inflammatory, antivector, insect-repellent, antidiabetic, antifertility and antimelangogenesis activities.
