Let’s Talk About: Living Roots

One of the core principles of Regenerative Agriculture is keeping living roots in the ground year-round…and for good reason.

Roots do more than anchor plants—they actively shape soil health by feeding microbial communities, building structure, cycling nutrients, and improving water retention.

Through root exudates (sugars, acids, and other compounds) plants form mutually beneficial relationships with soil microbes that enhance fertility and resilience.

Keeping living roots in the ground, whether through cover crops, perennials, or intercropping, ensures that the soil ecosystem stays alive, active, and regenerative.

Living roots = living soil. And living soil is where regeneration begins.
