Post Series: Global Traditional Medicine Systems

In order to spread awareness about the rich living herbal traditions from around the world, this post series is intended to introduce some of the characteristics of the herbal or traditional medicine systems to which plants belong.

Moroccan traditional medicine encompasses a wide range of treatments derived from Berber, Arab, and Andalusian influences, reflecting Morocco’s unique geographical and cultural crossroads. This traditional medicine relies on natural remedies, spiritual practices, and holistic approaches to promote health and well-being, often serving as a complementary or alternative option to modern medical practices.

Herbal medicine is a cornerstone among the techniques employed in Moroccan traditional medicine, with practitioners using a wide array of plants and natural substances to create preparations in the form of teas, infusions, powders, and oils. Traditional healers, known as herbalists or fqihs, possess extensive knowledge of these natural treatments and their applications. Another common technique is the use of hammams, or traditional steam baths, which are used to detoxify the body, improve circulation, and enhance overall health. In addition to physical treatments, Moroccan traditional medicine often incorporates spiritual practices, such as the recitation of prayers and the use of amulets or talismans, to address both physical and emotional ailments. Cupping therapy, known as hijama, is also practiced to remove toxins and improve blood flow.

Several plants are integral to Moroccan traditional medicine, reflecting the country’s rich biodiversity. For example, Argan oil, derived from the kernels of the Argan tree (Argania spinosa), is widely used for its anti-inflammatory and skin-healing properties. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is another very important plant, used for diabetes and inflammation. Azkouni (Thymus satureioides) has been used for a variety of ailments, including hypertension, diabetes, skin and circulatory health and respiratory complaints. Various mint species and varieties, such as Moroccan Mint are frequently used to soothe digestive issues and provide a refreshing, calming effect.
