Hemp-derived THC beverages are booming…but are consumers really getting the dose on the label?
Future Nutra Foundation (FNF), an independent nonprofit supplement testing organization, has just published a new multi-laboratory report on hemp-derived Δ9-THC beverage potencies. FNF purchased 21 popular products from retail and online channels and sent matched batches to three ISO/IEC 17025-accredited cannabis labs for potency testing.
The results are sobering:
➡️ Only 4 of 21 beverages (19%) landed within FNF’s 90–110% “accurate dose” window.
➡️ 12 products (57%) delivered less than 80% of the THC claimed on the label, with some measuring under one quarter of the stated dose.
➡️ One product was overdosed, at ~119% of its labeled THC content.
In other words, most products tested did not deliver the dose promised on their labels, undermining trust for consumers, clinicians, retailers, and responsible brands. Despite this, a minority of brands demonstrated that accurate, predictable dosing is absolutely achievable in this category.
FNF’s protocol relied on off-the-shelf purchasing, matched batch submission, and validated HPLC/UHPLC methods across three independent accredited laboratories to focus on real-world potency at the point of purchase…not just at the point of manufacture. The report also highlights a critical gap between QR-code-linked Certificates of Analysis and what ends up in the bottle on store shelves, underscoring why independent, retail-sourced testing must complement manufacturer COAs.
This is a call to action for hemp beverage brands, regulators, and trade groups to:
✅ Implement robust, validated potency testing with batch-to-batch verification against clear internal specifications.
✅ Align specifications with a reasonable accuracy window (e.g., 90–110% of labeled Δ9-THC content).
✅ Pair COA transparency with real stability data across shelf life to ensure the product in the consumer’s hands matches the promise on the label.
Hemp-derived THC beverages are here to stay. For this category to mature into a trusted, long-term option for adult and therapeutic use, accurate labeling and transparent testing must become the norm, not the exception.
