Plants exchange information through root exudates, VOCs, and electrical signals, forming a “network” that allows them to warn each other of threats or share resources.
This is sometimes referred to as the “Wood Wide Web.”
Experiment: Suzanne Simard demonstrated that trees communicate through mycorrhizal networks by transferring nutrients and signaling distress. For example, dying trees redistributed carbon to neighboring trees. (Simard, S., et al., “Net Transfer of Carbon between Ectomycorrhizal Tree Species in the Field,” Nature, 1997).
