Puya raimondii, also known as the Queen of the Andes, is the largest species of bromeliad and one of the most extraordinary plants in the world.
Native to high-altitude regions of Bolivia and Peru, it can grow up to 15 meters (50 feet) tall when in bloom, including its massive flower spike.
This rare plant takes decades (often over 80 years) to mature and produces over 8,000 individual flowers and millions of seeds during its single blooming event before dying, a process known as semelparity.
