Quality of Life Berries

Goji Berries (aka. Wolfberries (Lycium barbarum & L. chinense) are the fruits that are harvested from one of two similar species in the Lycium genus native to Asia.

Goji Berries have been long used in traditional Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, Tibetan, Mongolian and Japanese traditional medicine systems.

From the start of the new millennium, Goji Berries also became popular “super food” products, often with exaggerated claims.

The fruits can be eaten raw, dried or cooked, and they are known for their sweet-tart and chewy texture.

The young shoots are also sometimes cooked and used as a vegetable, and the leaves are used as a tea substitute.

Goji berries as well as the leaves have been thought of as adaptogens and tonics to increase vigor, longevity and mood.  They are also useful as natural colorants.

They are mostly used in traditional Chinese medicine as a nutritive tonic for the liver, kidneys and blood. They are also used to enhance vision and promote longevity, often consumed in medicinal broths for strengthening vitality and overall well-being.

They are also very popular as Super Food products for adding antioxidants to the diet.

The seed oil has sometimes been used in cosmetic properties for its nourishing properties.

Though there have been few clinical studies, there is preliminary clinical evidence that Goji Berries may reduce blood glucose and improve insulin resistance, improve dry eyes, weight loss, and measures of quality of life, including feelings of health, contentment, mood, gastrointestinal regularity, energy levels, sleep quality, athletic performance, calmness and mental acuity.

One notable study published found that daily consumption of Goji berry juice improved feelings of well-being, energy, and digestive health in healthy adults within two weeks.
