The Crown of Wisdom

The Crown of Wisdom

The Greeks and the Romans both believed the Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis) to symbolize wisdom, peace and protection. This is most recognizable today in the depictions of the Greek heroes, scholars and athletes wearing crowns of Bay Laurel leaves.

Bay Laurel was also used in rituals by the Delphic oracle and for ritual soothsaying, possibly due to its narcotic effect (in large doses). In ancient times it was believed to have power to ward off evil and disease.

Today, Bay Laurel leaves take their main place in our spice cabinets, as they are typically used in cuisine to impart a sweet aroma to foods. Its berries can also be used as a flavoring agent. The Bay Laurel leaf is one of the components of the classic bouquet garni, useful in a number of recipes especially ones involving sauces, soups and meats.

The Bay Laurel has traditional medicinal uses, including for diabetes, cancer, flatulence, bronchitis, flu, to induce sweating, migraines, dandruff, joint pains and to stimulate bile flow. Interestingly, Bay Laurel contains parthenolides, which are the chemical components in Feverfew associated with migraine benefits.

The essential oil of Bay Laurel was found to have the main components of 1,8-Cineole, sabinene, and linalool, and exhibit antimicrobial, antifungal, antibiofilm activities, and possibly effects on the central nervous system, as well.
