The Rejuvenating Old Man Weed

Old Man Weed (aka. Common Sneezeweed; Centipeda cunninghamii) is a plant native to Australia and New Zealand which is widely distributed in moist, muddy areas, mostly around streams or lakes.

It is a favored traditional medicine among the Aboriginal Australians for its soothing, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties.

It has a strong reputation for clearing blockages and speeding healing, as well as colds, sinus congestion and asthma.

Old Man Weed is an herbaceous plant that has a distinct leaf shape and a strong aroma—often described as pine-like. It has a sprawling habit with yellow-green flower heads.

One of the interesting traditional methods of use is to bind the plant to the body so that the warmth of the body releases the oils into the skin, where they are absorbed.

It has also been taken internally (with caution) as a tea and by mixing with fat.

Claims are being made for skin care products containing Old Man Weed, that it not only has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties, but can reduce the appearance of broken capillaries, acne, redness, promote cell regeneration and minimize the appearance of wrinkles.

An interesting study published from 2017 showed that Old Man Weed extract significantly reduced inflammatory cytokine production in human cell models, highlighting its potential as a natural anti-inflammatory agent for skin and respiratory health.

Another study found that the extract promoted wound closure and exhibited antibacterial effects against skin pathogens, supporting its traditional use in treating cuts and infections.
