Post Series: Global Traditional Medicine Systems
In order to spread awareness about the rich living herbal traditions from around the world, this post series is intended to introduce some of the characteristics of the herbal or traditional medicine systems to which plants belong.
Traditional Filipino Medicine combines indigenous knowledge with practices influenced by centuries of trade and colonization, integrating elements of Chinese, Indian, and Spanish healing traditions. Traditional Filipino Medicine focuses on harmony between the body, mind, spirit, and nature, emphasizing preventive care, balance, and the use of natural remedies.
It is especially vital in rural areas where modern healthcare may be inaccessible.
The techniques used in Traditional Filipino Medicine are diverse and tailored to specific ailments. Hilot, a form of traditional massage, is widely practiced to treat muscle pains, realign bones, and restore energy flow. Ventosa, a type of cupping therapy, uses heated glasses to relieve body stress and improve circulation. Faith healing is another common practice, often involving prayers, rituals, and herbal preparations. In addition, herbal medicine plays a significant role, with decoctions, poultices, and infusions prepared from locally available plants. Traditional Filipino Medicine also employs spiritual cleansing techniques, such as smudging with herbs or offerings, to ward off negative energies.
The Philippines’ biodiversity provides a wealth of medicinal plants used in Traditional Filipino Medicine. Lagundi (Vitex negundo) is used for supporting respiratory ailments like coughs and colds. Sambong (Blumea balsamifera) acts as a diuretic and is used for urinary issues and kidney stones. Ampalaya (Momordica charantia), or Bitter Melon, is recognized for its ability to support blood sugar. Tsaang Gubat (Ehretia microphylla) is consumed as tea for digestive health. Akapulko (Senna alata) is applied as a poultice to fungal infections like ringworm.
