Fungi Fact: Mushrooms Can Glow!

Foxfire is the phenomenon where certain types of mushrooms and fungi emit a natural, eerie greenish-blue light in the dark. This bioluminescence occurs in species like Armillaria (honey mushrooms) and Panellus stipticus, caused by a chemical reaction involving the enzyme luciferase.

The exact reason for this glow is still debated, but it’s believed to help attract insects that can spread the fungus’s spores or to deter predators.

This glowing ability, often referred to as “fairy fire” in folklore, is one of nature’s examples of living organisms producing light.
