Linalool- Important Bioactive From Plants!

Linalool, Bioactive

Linalool is a naturally occurring terpene alcohol found in high concentrations in lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), basil (Ocimum basilicum), and coriander (Coriandrum sativum). This compound is responsible for the pleasant floral and spicy aroma associated with these plants and is gaining attention for its calming and anxiolytic effects.

Among its possible health benefits:

·     Antimicrobial
·     Antiinflammatory
·     Analgesic
·     Anxiolytic
·     Sedative Effects
·     Antioxidant
·     Neuroprotective
·     Anticancer

A recent preclinical study conducted by researchers from Kagoshima University in Japan has highlighted the calming effects of linalool. The study demonstrated that the anxiolytic effects of linalool are mediated through olfactory signals rather than direct absorption into the bloodstream. Linalool vapor was found to significantly reduce anxiety without impairing movement, unlike conventional anxiolytics like benzodiazepines. Additionally, with impaired olfactory function the calming effect was impaired, indicating that the sense of smell is crucial for linalool’s effects. These findings highlight the potential for further research into the use of linalool as a non-invasive treatment for anxiety, especially useful in preoperative settings and for patients who have difficulty with oral or suppository medications.
