Piperine

Piperine

Important Bioactive From Plants!

Piperine  is an alkaloid, and is considered the primary bioactive compound in  black pepper (Piper nigrum) and long pepper (Piper longum), which are  notable for their pungency and widespread use as spices in culinary  traditions worldwide.

Among its possible health benefits:
·     Bioavailability Enhancement
·     Antioxidant
·     Anti-inflammatory
·     Anticancer
·     Antimicrobial
·     Neuroprotective
·     Metabolic Benefits
·     Analgesic

Interestingly,  a preclinical study published in 2020 in the journal Phytotherapy  Research investigated the potential of piperine as an antidepressant.  The researchers aimed to evaluate piperine’s effects on chronic  unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced depression in animal models.  The study revealed that piperine administration significantly alleviated  depressive-like behaviors, and noted an increase in serotonin and  dopamine levels in the brain, indicating an enhancement in  neurotransmitter activity associated with mood regulation. Piperine  exhibited neuroprotective properties by reducing oxidative stress and  inflammation in the brain, contributing to its antidepressant effects.
