Sabinene is a naturally occurring monoterpene with a distinctive woody and peppery aroma. Sabinene is found in the essential oils of various plants, including black pepper (Piper nigrum), nutmeg (Myristica fragrans), and Norway spruce (Picea abies). It is also present in significant amounts in the leaves of marjoram (Origanum majorana) and tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia).
Among its possible health benefits:
· Antimicrobial
· Antiinflammatory
· Antioxidant
· Analgesic
· Antispasmodic
· Anti-arthritic
· Neuroprotective
· Insecticidal
An interesting published in 2021 explored the potential neuroprotective effects of sabinene, in the context of Parkinson’s disease. In this preclinical model, researchers found that sabinene administration significantly improved motor function and reduced neuroinflammation.
Additionally, sabinene was observed to increase the levels of dopamine, a crucial neurotransmitter that is deficient in Parkinson’s disease. Sabinene’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, were theorized to helped protect the dopaminergic neurons from degeneration.
