The largest organism on Earth isn’t an animal or tree, but a colossal fungus known as the honey fungus (Armillaria ostoyae).
Found in Oregon’s Malheur National Forest, this single organism spans over 3.7 miles (6 kilometers) underground and is thousands of years old. That is one Humongous Fungus!
It’s made up of a vast network of mycelium, the thread-like structures fungi use to absorb nutrients. Estimated to be thousands of years old, this fungus spreads by extending its underground web, infecting trees and plants as it grows. Despite its massive size, much of it is hidden beneath the forest floor, with only mushrooms occasionally appearing above ground.
