Harunga (aka The Orange Milk Tree, Harungana madagascariensis), is a tree that is native to Madagascar. It has been used in traditional medicine for various purposes.
It is reported that the plant was already collected in Madagascar for its medicinal properties by the first Arabic travelers to the island more than 1000 years ago. The leaves of the tree are used to improve liver function, and for their antiseptic and healing benefits.
Harunga’s orangey-red sap is used to sooth skin irritations. The bar, sap and gum of the tree are valued in traditional medicine for their skin health and antiseptic uses. It is also known traditionally for promoting liver health, stomach health, as a styptic, and aphrodisiac, among other uses.
Through scientific investigation, Harunga was found to have retinol-like properties, upregulating genes and protein expression in human skin models.
